Nic & Rachael Billman – Take It By Force, Drum replacement

Several of my friends have been asking for a video of me playing, so I thought I’d mess with that. This is me, playing new drums to a multi-track project from the 2007/2008 Album from Nic & Rachael Billman called Anthem. I played on the original track and mixed the album, so I had the tracks handy. I mostly played what was there originally, though I made some changes.

The big challenge was setting up a click track that changed tempo with the song. It was all over the place from 153 at the start to around 132 for most of the song. I also totally jumped the ending as you’ll see, and there was a little mis toward the end where you see me open my mouth as I realize it.

It’s interesting to watch yourself play. I haven’t played in a few years, and even then not nearly as much as I used to 6 or 7 years ago. I can see some bad habits in my playing. One thing I notice is I’m not nearly as loose as I used to be so I need to work on loosening up my wrists. That left/snare hand is like an iron hammer lol. I also notice something my wife mentions to me when I play, which is that I bite down on my lips inside my mouth.

Also, I’m no audio engineer. This was recorded and mixed in Logic Pro just by ear using mostly presets and fiddling with the EQ. The reverb is set to “80’s drums” lol!

Anyway, I figured I’d post this, warts and all just for fun.

And yes, I know the kick is OUT OF CONTROL at the start of the video. I hate it when I can’t hear the kick in the mix, so I overdid it a bit lol!

Here’s the original track for reference:
